Tesla Bot — Data Collection & The New Opportunities

The future is my main source of excitement and motivation — the incredible technologies that are coming, the constant solving of problems and us humans figuring out the meaning of life gets me jumping out of bed each morning.

Tesla are having their AI Day soon (Sept 30th), so I found myself thinking of that Tesla Bot — ‘Optimus Subprime’ as Elon calls it. I was thinking how would Tesla get this humanoid robot to actually perform human-level tasks and eventually have enough data to simulate real general human behavior.

Elon said that the tesla cars are already semi-sentient robots on wheels, so that gave me some ideas on how they could approach making a semi-sentient humanoid robot.

So…

How to get that bot to perform tasks at human level?

Data Collection:

The same way Tesla vehicles constantly collect data while on the roads, humans will be performing a sequence of required tasks while wearing data collecting devices.

Human performs tasks while wearing data collecting suit and feeds it to Tesla Bot AI

Requires: Inertial mocap sensors, 2x forward facing cameras/VR headset, mocap gloves, WiFi, computer that receives the data

*Inertial mocap sensors such as Xsens do not require any camera tracking and hold a bodypack for processing the data and sending it to a computer over WiFi
*Can also record data offline on the bodypack storage

Opportunity For New Jobs:

I foresee a new sector of jobs opening where humans will work/play the role of data providers for humanoid robots.

Start with narrow tasks, easy locomotion on Tesla gigafactory flat concrete floor, performing basic factory work at first. Compound over time into general AI.

Leverage the current labor force — humans working at the factory (good start):
To do the work humans must have an inertial mocap suit, 2x forward facing cameras + mocap gloves, WiFi, computer

They must perform their tasks as usual in the Tesla gigafactory. Best performing human workers are chosen. Data is collected, labeled and fed into Tesla Bot AI system.

Leverage the whole world — humans working/playing from home (data abundance):
To do the work humans must have an inertial mocap suit, VR headset + mocap gloves, WiFi, PC/Console.

They play a game where they must perform tasks identical to the tasks at the Tesla gigafactory. Layout and behaviour of all in-factory elements must be 1:1 with real-world ones. Humans are rated based on their quality of performing the required task — higher rated humans are paid bigger salary. Data is collected, labeled and fed into Tesla Bot AI system.

*Eventually Dojo is introduced into the mix to cover leftover cases

Some of the Tesla Bot benefits in the Tesla gigafactory I see:

  • Helps transition the current vehicle fleet into electric quicker
  • Simplifies management and maintenance of Tesla labor force
  • Dramatically reduce company costs
  • Create new jobs

  • New job — Work as a Tesla Bot data provider
  • Lots and lots of entertainment opportunities
  • Hivemind Tesla Bot — Livestream where viewers can write commands in the chat to operate a single Tesla Bot
  • Send Tesla Bot to dangerous places instead of humans — space, moon, mars
